Hopetown was founded in 1854 and named after Mayor William Hope. It was left largely undisturbed by the great diamond rush of the 1870's although it was here where the Eureka (1867) and the 83,5 carat diamond, known as the Star of SA, was discovered and marked the beginning of the diamond epoch in the history of SA.
