Koster was named after Bastiaan Hendricus Koster, a native of Rotterdam who in 1860 settled on the farm Kleinfontein on which the town was later established. The town is the centre of maize production, although other grains, tobacco and citrus fruit are also grown in the district. The very last diamond rush in SA took place in the Koster district in 1970.
