Memel was founded in 1913 and is situated in the Drakensberg area in the northeastern corner of the Free State. This quaint town is nestled between vast plains, mountains and streams. The name Memel (meaning 'surrounded by water') is of Prussian origin and is indeed an apt description, for this is a water-rich area with unique wetlands. The whole area is of spectacular beauty and is a nature lover's dream.
